Tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine hydrochloride or TCEP is a versatile reagent that is able to reduce disulfides, sulfoxides, sulfonyl chlorides, N-oxides, and azides. It is a white crystalline solid, that is well soluble in water. Besides being air-stable, water-soluble, and odorless, TCEP is also pH tolerant, buffers in aqueous media, and tolerates a variety of functional groups under synthetic, biological, and physiological conditions as a reducing reagent. TCEP is found to be a suitable reducing agent for the Staudinger reaction in bioconjugation and peptide ligation and also it is often employed for thiol (as disulfide) deprotection.
