Reagent for sulfenylation

N-Phenylthiophthalimide is a mild sulfenylating reagent with broad applications in organic synthesis¹. It reacts with amines and thiols to form sulfenyl amines and disulfides respectively. The reagent can be used for synthesizing mixed sulfides via Grignard or organolithium reagents. Additionally, it facilitates the bis-sulfenylation of activated carbonyl compounds and cyclic ketones, providing key intermediates for the synthesis of 3-substituted 2-buten-4-olides. The reagent is a bench-stable colorless solid with a melting point of 160–161°C.
