Reagent for the synthesis of sulfamates and sulfamides

Hexafluoroisopropyl sulfamate (shortly HFIPS) is a simple tool in the synthesis of sulfamates and sulfamides. This crystalline white powder is both bench-stable and convenient to handle, simplifying experimental procedures. It reacts readily with a wide variety of alcohols, amines, phenols, and anilines under mild reaction conditions. The sole byproduct generated during the reaction is hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP), which can be easily removed. After an optional aqueous workup and solvent evaporation, the reaction products can often be isolated in high purity. HFIPS exhibits perfect selectivity to the targeted functional group and in the case of amino alcohols prefers the formation of sulfamides.
